What you’re buying

Four things it has to do.

Not four features. Four jobs. A website that does three of these and misses the fourth is the one you end up paying somebody to replace.

Look like a business worth hiring

People decide about you in about three seconds, before they have read a word. A current, clean site says you are still trading and you take the work seriously. A dated one says the opposite whether that is true or not, and you never find out you lost the job.

Get found on Google

Keyword research first, then the page titles, headings and copy built around the words people actually type — the job they need doing, plus where they are. On-page SEO is in the build, not sold to you afterwards and not a monthly fee.

Work properly on a phone

Most of the people looking for you are standing somewhere holding one, half paying attention. It gets designed at that size first and checked at every other one — text you can read, buttons you can actually hit, and a number you can tap without pinching the screen.

Get you calls, not compliments

Every page has one obvious next thing to do. The phone number is never more than a thumb away. And the copy answers the question that is actually stopping somebody ringing — what it costs, how soon, and whether you do their kind of job. That is the whole point of the exercise.

What gets built

Every page your business needs.

A page for each job you want to be called about

Usually five to eight: home, what you do, a page for each service worth its own, about, contact. The services get their own pages because that is how people search — nobody types “Chandler business,” they type the job they need doing. One page trying to cover six services ranks for none of them. Six pages, each answering one search, is how you get found.

I write all of it

You answer questions about your own trade and I turn that into the copy. No filling in a template, and no “send me your content” email that sits in your inbox for a month.

And you own it

When you pay, you get the entire website in one file. Your domain stays in your name. Leave whenever you like and take the lot with you.

The process

Live in about a week.

Four steps, and the only one that takes any of your time is the first. You pay at the end, after you have seen it.

Fifteen minutes on the phone

What you do, who you want calling, and what a good job looks like next to one you would rather not take. You don’t need to know anything about websites. That is my end.

Research before a page exists

Who already ranks for your trade round here, what they have all missed, and the exact words people type when they need what you do. That decides which pages get built and what each one is for.

You see the home page first

Before anything else gets built and before you have paid anything. Tell me what you like and what you don’t. If it isn’t what you wanted, that is the end of it and you owe me nothing.

Live, and handed over

You pay, I send you the whole website in one file, and you point your domain at the hosting — mine or your own. Up a couple of hours later, then submitted to Google so it starts getting indexed.

Your side of it

What I need from you.

Short list. The domain is the only thing you have to buy, and you don’t buy it from me.

Before we start

Roughly an hour of your time, spread across the week

  • A domain name. About $15 a year, bought by you and kept in your name at your own registrar. If you don’t have one I’ll tell you what to buy and where.
  • Somewhere to host it. Mine at $29 a month, or your own — if you already pay for hosting, you don’t need mine.
  • Your logo and photos, if you have them. If you don’t, I’ll build it without and it will still look like a real business.
  • Fifteen minutes on the phone, then answers to a few questions while I write.
  • One look at the home page before anything else gets built, so we catch it early if the direction is wrong.

Before you ask

The questions I get every time.

I have a Google Business Profile. Isn’t that enough?

It’s the most important thing you’ve got and you should be working on it either way — the reviews on it matter more for the map results than anything on a website. But a profile is a box on a search page. It can’t explain what you actually do, price a job, answer the question that’s stopping somebody calling, or turn up at all for the searches that aren’t map searches. The two do different jobs, and the profile does better when there’s a real site behind it.

I already have hosting. Do I have to use yours?

No. The $600 build stands on its own. You pay it, I send you the finished website in one file, and it goes up wherever your hosting already is — it’s a plain static site, so any host will run it. The $29 a month is only for people who’d rather not deal with hosting at all.

I don’t have a domain yet. What do I buy?

Your business name with .com on the end if it’s free, and something close to it if it isn’t. About $15 a year from any registrar. Buy it yourself and keep it in your own name — I never hold a client’s domain, because a domain you don’t control is how people end up stuck with a web designer they want to leave.

I don’t have any photos of my work.

Then we build it without them and add them later. A site with no photos and the right words beats a site with great photos that never says what you do. Take some on your phone as you go and text them to me — photo swaps are covered by the $29.

How long before it starts bringing anything in?

Straight answer: the site is live in about a week, but Google takes longer than that to trust a brand new address — usually weeks, sometimes a couple of months, for the searches worth having. What works sooner is everywhere you can point people yourself: your Google Business Profile, your van, your quotes, your invoices, your Facebook page. The site starts earning the day you have somewhere to send people.

What if I don’t like it?

You see the home page before you pay anything. If it isn’t right, you owe me nothing and we shake hands. That is the whole risk to you.

What it costs

One number. $600.

Agreed before I start, and it doesn’t move. Not a deposit, not a starting-from, and not a quote you have to sit through a meeting to get.
